Study Abroad… aka the time of my life

How does one encapsulate or begin to describe the beauty of places, people, food and culture? I am intimidated by this post, realizing that I may not be able to accurately depict my experience in a manner that does it justice. It was the experience of a lifetime really. 20 days 7 countries 5 flights 5 train rides 2 taxi rides 984393885 bus rides 6 waterbus rides Logistics We flew into Schiphol Amsterdam airport from Dulles in D.C on Thursday, June 6th. I attempted to sleep during our eight hour flight but I can’t seem to fall asleep in public places (probably because I sleep with my mouth wide open…

“What are you doing this summer?”

This summer will look very different from those preceding it. For starters, I am not home this summer. I will be living on campus this summer participating in a program called Summer Scholars. This is a selective program where, once accepted, you are paid to do research alongside a professor during the summer. I was asked by my favorite professor and even though mathematical research is scary, I would do anything to have the chance to work under this woman (she’s awesome). I thought about writing out what I will be researching but normally when I explain it to people they zone out and say I lost them after “so…

Adelyn, Erika and The Big Apple

Last year for Erika’s 20th birthday, we began the beautiful tradition of celebrating her birthday in some extraordinary way. Last year Erika and I rented out a super eclectic AirBnB and celebrated in the cute little city of Norfolk as she walked around with a paper “Happy Birthday” crown. We had such a great time and felt as though the world was at our fingertips haha. We were adults. But this year it was her 21st birthday, so obviously we had to go big or go home… literally. It was probably October when we were catching up on the phone and I reminded Erika that we had to do something…

    Youth Ministry

One of the biggest blessings in my life right now is serving as a volunteer leader for Peninsula Community Chapel (the church that I’ve been plugged into over a year now). I get the pleasure to spend my Sunday evenings in fellowship not only with awesome students, but fellow leaders who challenge me and broaden my view of the Gospel as we discuss the lessons and eat dinner before the students arrive. Serving as a volunteer youth leader was always something I thought I might do later on in my college career, but it was not something that I thought that I would be approached about my fall semester freshman…

The One Where Sheila Took On a Cop

It was a cold, rainy night that four friends set out to make more cheery. It was December 1st and Mattie, Emma, Emily and I were determined to go to a tree lighting event they have here in Newport News, despite the yucky weather. After an hour spent in the rain, walking around and trying to get in the Christmas spirit with fake snow and the lighting of the tree, we decided to head to BJ’s to feast on some delicious and gooey hot cookies. While we scarfed down our cookies, we tried to identify which book/movie/tv show character best represented one another. For those of you who don’t know…
